BC Culture Days

Culture Days is a collaborative, Canada-wide volunteer movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. The first annual Culture Days event swept across more than 700 Canadian cities and towns during the last weekend of September 2010, generating an extraordinary amount of enthusiasm in the process. This year’s Culture Days weekend will take place on September 28, 29 & 30. Once again, the event will feature free, hands-on, interactive activities that invite the public to participate “behind the scenes”—and to discover the world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators, and designers at work in their community.

As a grassroots, collaborative movement, Culture Days relies on your participation. Whether as an arts or cultural organization, an artist, a municipality, a school, a citizen, a business person…everyone can play a role in shaping this event. Brass Fest at UBC

I am writing to invite you to the Second Annual Brassfest workshop held at the University of British Columbia on Sunday, February 5, from 9am-6pm in UBC's Old Auditorium. A full day of clinics and performances, Brassfest is designed for players of all ages and skill levels. There were over 300 participants in our inaugural year, and this year's event has been expanded to include a Brass Resource Centre, two additional hours of workshops, a double-header guest artist combo, and a mass brass grand finale performance featuring all participants!

The day of special events will feature internationally renowned artists Daniel Perantoni (tuba) and Ralph Sauer (trombone), as well as workshops by UBC faculty members Larry Knopp, Alan Matheson, Ben Kinsman, Richard Mingus, Gregory Cox, Jeremy Berkman, and Peder Maclellan; performances by Vancouver Brass Project, Little Mountain Brass Band, and the UBC Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Brass Ensembles; and a Brass Resource Centre featuring equipment and sheet music displays by our generous sponsors: The Brass Cellar, Cherry Classics, Harrison Mouthpieces, Long & McQuade, Massullo Music, Matterhorn Music, Northwest Musical Services, Tom Lee Music, Yamaha Canada Music, and more!

BC Arts and Culture Week, April 2012

Coming up on its 13th year, Arts and Culture Week turns the spotlight on the vital contribution that arts and culture make in learning and in life. Music, films, media arts, dance, books, theatre and visual art are a part of daily life, and have a lasting impact. They inspire us, challenge us and broaden our horizons and help us to become informed, aware and contributing members of society.

Next year, from April 22-28, hundreds of arts councils and schools across BC will be participating in this week-long celebration of the arts. Each year, over 20,000 artists, young people, educators and community members host and participate in performances, art walks, exhibitions, workshops, and public art projects.

Culture Days at CMC

The Canadian Music Centre BC is participating in the Canada wide Culture Days.

We are hosting a number of events at the BC Creative Hub (our performance space) @ 837 Davie St (between Howe and Hornby). Vancouver BC

CMC BC Open House on Friday September 30th, 2011 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm;

A Weekend Score Reading Club on Saturday October 1st, 2011 from 10:00am to 12:00pm; and

from 1:00pm to 3:30pm on Saturday October 1st, 2011 a Panel discussion with the Composers and Choreographers participating in the upcoming 10x10x10 show (on October 12-15 at the Dance Centre)

A Special Weekend Edition of the Score Reading Club for Culture Days 2011!
As usual, the Score Reading Club is FREE to attend, and this meeting will feature
FOUR distinguished presenters.
Discover gems you may not know, hear something new, and engage in dialogue
about the works.
Composer Jennifer Butler will present a classic Canadian work, R. Murray
Schafer's And Wolf Shall Inherit the Moon. Composer Michael Conway Baker
will present Swiss composer Frank Martin's Petite Symphonie Concertante, a
wonderful work for the unusual combination of piano, harpsichord, harp and string
orchestra. Also featured will be two works to be presented by the Vancouver Inter-
Cultural Orchestra (VICO) and Orchestra Armonia at their October 16th concert.
VICO Co-Artistic Directors Mark Armanini and Moshe Denburg will present
Baban Variations by Lan Tung, and Mark Armanini's Night Bird Singing.
At the SRC, we collectively look at scores, listen to the music and discuss the
works. Please note that no music-reading skills are necessary to enjoy the
session. Everyone is welcome!

BC Arts and Culture Week

BC Arts and Culture Week is taking place April 10th to 16th, 2011 presented by ArtStarts and the Assembly of BC Arts Councils.

Arts and Culture Week BCNow in its 12th year, this event turns the spotlight on the vital contribution that Arts and Culture make in learning and in life. Music, film, media arts, dance, books, theatre and visual art are a part of daily life. They inspire us, challenge us, broaden our horizons and help us to become informed, aware and contributing members of society.

Events will take place across the province and are listed online by region: Vancouver Island/Coast (includes Vancouver Island, Gulf Islands and Sunshine Coast), Lower Mainland (includes Sea to Sky corridor, the Whistler area and the Fraser Valley), Kootenays, Interior (includes the Thompson Okanagan, Cariboo and Bella Coola), and North (includes the Queen Charlottes, Prince Rupert to Smithers, and the Peace-Liard).

Some of these events are public and others are listed to provide examples of how schools are participating within their own walls through exhibits and performances.


If your community organization or school is hosting an event that suits the BC Arts and Culture Week profile, you can submit it for listing online.

South Delta Jazz Festival 2011

Delta Community Music School will once again be hosting the annual South Delta Jazz Festival and Workshop. Our annual summer jazz workshop will run this year from July 5th - 9th at the Delta Community Music School and Ladner Community Centre.
Our workshop faculty this year will include Dr. Jared Burrows (guitar -Capilano University) Dr. Edward Orgill (saxophone- Westfield State College), Bill Clark (trumpet), Rob Kohler (bass),  Stan Taylor (drums), Brad Muirhead (trombone) and Stephen Robb (clarinet / saxophone).

Toronto Symphony Orchestra National Piano Competition

We are writing to remind you of the deadline for entries to the 2011 Toronto Symphony Orchestra National Piano Competition. The deadline is FEBRUARY 18, 2011. The Competition will take place on May 27, 28 and 29, 2011 in Toronto at The Royal Conservatory.

ENTRY RULES AND PROCEDURE

• Deadline: Applications must be postmarked no later than February 18, 2011. No exceptions.

• Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants between the ages of 16 and 25 as of May 27, 2011.

• Excellence in performance is required at or above the ARCT level.

• All selections must be performed from memory.

• Applicants must be willing to be contacted by the competition publicist.

Entry fees are non-refundable except in the case of illness or
accident. Medical certificate required.Previous first-prize winners of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra
National Piano Competition are not eligible to compete. Competitors must make arrangements for their accompanists and are responsible for their costs. Local accompanists will be available upon request.
Competitors are responsible for their travel costs and must arrange their own accommodation. A list of local hotels and university residences will be provided.
Applicants will be notified of the status of their entry by the end of March 2011. Successful applicants will be notified two weeks before the competition as to date and time of performance.

Saxophone conference at UBC

The School of Music at the University of British Columbia is pleased to host the Region 9 Conference of the North American Saxophone Alliance from Thursday, February 17 to Saturday, February 19, 2011. We invite NASA members to contribute with performances, presentations of scholarly research, educational research, lectures, clinics, master classes, and saxophone activities within our region. Conference registration is free for NASA members. High school students can register as NASA members for the special rate of $10.00. Information and participation forms can be found here.

Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival 2011

The Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival website is now open for registrations for the 2011 Festival.
Entry deadline is January 15, 2011

• Jazz Band - Feb. 24,25, 2011
• Choral Festival - April 7 - 9, 2011
• Vocal Jazz - April 20, 2011

Simply go to http://www.vkmfestivals.org/ and click on the orange button at the top of the page. Choose the Category buttons at the top to begin the four step process. One on the site, you can enter up to four groups for all our group festivals, simplifying the process. YOU MAY ALSO PAY BY CHEQUE OR CREDIT CARD at the final step.

ONLY the first 10 applications will be accepted in each category


2011 Bursary Competition is for students who perform in ANY classical music discipline
Students need to be registered in 3rd year or higher of a Bachelor Music program - or registered in a graduate music program
ONLY the first 20 applications will be accepted in each category
