BC Arts and Culture Week, April 2012

Coming up on its 13th year, Arts and Culture Week turns the spotlight on the vital contribution that arts and culture make in learning and in life. Music, films, media arts, dance, books, theatre and visual art are a part of daily life, and have a lasting impact. They inspire us, challenge us and broaden our horizons and help us to become informed, aware and contributing members of society.

Next year, from April 22-28, hundreds of arts councils and schools across BC will be participating in this week-long celebration of the arts. Each year, over 20,000 artists, young people, educators and community members host and participate in performances, art walks, exhibitions, workshops, and public art projects.

Can Barbie save Classical Music?

With a wardrobe for any occasion, it’s easy to picture Barbie as a fashion icon for the public school set. But American conductor and music producer Arnie Roth also wants us to try to picture Barbie as a young cultural ambassador, introducing her friends to the magical worlds of ballet and classical music.
For the past nine years, Roth has worked with Barbie’s corporate parents at Mattel to create a series of 10 straight-to-DVD movies based on timeless stories and ballets. All of them feature classical music on the soundtracks.
Released in more than 30 languages, these DVDs have sold in the hundreds of thousands around the world.

Barbie™ at the Symphony is a groundbreaking children's animated classical music experience, combining film projection of the best Barbie™ “ Princess” movies with the world’s most loved classical music scores performed LIVE by the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony.
This series of CGI animated films features Barbie™ singing and dancing to ballet sequences choreographed by Peter Martins of the renowned New York City Ballet. Released in over 30 languages, these popular films have introduced millions of children to ballets such as The Nutcracker and Swan Lake and the timeless music to which they are set. Young audience members will be introduced to the arts through this thrilling new production written especially for them.
Popular scenes from the movies including Barbie™ as Rapunzel, Barbie™ in The 12 Dancing Princesses, Barbie™ as The Princess and the Pauper, Barbie™ and The Magic of Pegasus, and interactive conversations with Barbie™ captivate audience members of all ages.
The Good news here is that another generation of young people is being introduced to classical music.
Bravo!

Concerts this week

The South Delta Jazz Festival hosted by Delta Community Music School begins this week. Two concerts well worth attending will be the evening concerts on Friday and Saturday.

Friday July 10th features saxophonist Dave Branter. Dave is a wonderful musician who can play a wide variety of styles from jazz to all things classical and contemporary. For this event he will be playing mainstream jazz with our festival band.

Saturday July 11 features Steve Maddock with pianist Lorne Kellett and the faculty band. Steve has a wonderful jazz baritone voice, and I am sure this will be one unforgetable concert.

Both concerts are at 7:30 pm at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre, and tickets are just $10 for each concert. Tickets at the door, or at South Coast Casuals on 48th Ave. in Ladner Village

Evening Concert with Joe Trio
July 11, 2009 @ 7PM

1120 Brunette Avenue
Coquitlam, BC

To mark the 100th Anniversary of Maillardville, this year's Fair in the Square includes a special evening concert featuring renowned classically trained violin-cello-piano threesome, Joe Trio.

Not your average piano trio, Joe Trio is not neatly categorized, but instead strives for diversity, versatility and more than a little humour and unpredictability. Their repertoire consists of the classics, new works by contemporary composers and their own arrangements of popular, jazz and rock tunes.

Joe Trio features Allen Stiles on piano, Cameron Wilson on violin and Charles Inkman on cello.

The gate opens at 7:00 PM, allowing time to purchase a glass of wine or to enjoy the serene gardens of Heritage Square before the concert begins at 7:30 PM.

Tickets are $20, and are on sale now. They may be purchased in person at Place des Arts, by calling 604.664.1636 or at the gate.
